Development of methods to improve measurement resolution

Project start "Development of methods for improving the measurement resolution of profilometers based on mechanical axes."

GBS metrology GmbH was founded in 1997. GBS develops, manufactures and sells surface measurement technology for recording and evaluating micro-geometries, surface structures and roughness. Our products include:

                 • optical 3D sensors
                 • optical 3D profilometers
                 • gantry measuring devices and production-related measuring stations

Through massive parallel image processing on high-performance GPGPUs (general purpose graphic processing units), the shortest measurement times can be achieved and the measuring devices and 3D sensors can be used not only in the laboratory, but also close to production and inline. The measuring method used, white light interferometry (coherence scanning interferometry), can be used to record a wide variety of surfaces with extreme resolution.

GBS metrology GmbH is a manufacturer of optical 3D surface measuring devices, so-called profilometers. Normally, a high-precision piezo is used for the Z adjustment of this measuring technology. Using mechanical axes (spindle drive) could reduce costs and increase the fields of application of the measuring technology. However, investigations have shown that these axes have several deficiencies, which are reflected in the measurement results. The consequence of the preliminary investigations in the GBS was that a software-based correction is very complex and can only be solved by INP.

The project was launched on February 1, 2025 and is funded by the Thuringian Development Bank with financial support from the EU.
